The Wabamun Watershed Management Council (WWMC) is working on the following to achieve its goals and objectives:
- Increasing its General Membership.
- Raising funds to support the council and its projects.
- Researching and writing an Integrated Watershed Management Plan for the Lake Wabamun watershed including a Sate of the Watershed Report.
- Continuing to provide information to the community about nutrient loading and other issues which affect public health and the environmental integrity of the watershed.
- Providing a forum for communication, debate, and planning coordination among stakeholders in the Lake Wabamun watershed.
Over the past few years, the Council has been focusing on nutrient loading in the watershed, where nutrients from soils and other sources enter the lake and increase the productivity of algae and other plants.
This can be deterimental to the health and diversity of life in the lake. The WWMC has looked at this issue in depth at their meetings and has prepared some brochures that outline what stakeholders around the lake can do to help with this issue (see below).
Members of the Council have attended events throughout the watershed to discuss nutrient loading further with watershed residents. As well, the Council has sponsored, in partnership with the Federation of Alberta Naturalists, voluntary Home Site Consultations for lakeshore residents to help them
become stewards of their lakeshore and help keep the lake healthy.
