Over the next two years the Wabamun Watershed Management Council (WWMC) will be working on the following tasks:

  • Finalizing their terms-of-reference including ratifying the governance, structure and organizational bylaws of the Council.
  • Evaluating, prioritizing and acting on past recommendations (including those in the Schindler report), as well as current and emerging issues which affect public health and/or the ecological integrity of the watershed.
  • Developing the terms-of-reference for an Integrated Watershed Management Plan for the Lake Wabamun watershed.
  • Providing a forum for communication, debate, and planning coordination among representatives of the Lake Wabamun watershed.

In the short-term, the Council is focusing on their prime issue of concern: Nutrient Loading. The WWMC has looked at this issue in depth at their meetings and have prepared some brochures that outline what all sectors around the lake can do to help with this issue (see below).

Members of the Council attended events throughout the watershed over the past two summers to discuss this issue further with watershed residents. A specific focus was to work with the Living by Water Program and Alberta Conservation Team (ACT) to do free homesite consultations, initially at Seba Beach in 2008 and then with Moonlight Bay, Kapasiwin and Lakeview Residents in 2009. These consulations provided guidance specific to what homeowners can do to maintain healthy lakes and improve water quality.
