A Message from WWMC’s Executive Director

Welcome, and thank you for taking the time to learn more about the Wabamun Watershed Management Council.

Wabamun Lake is a place of tremendous ecological, recreational, and community value. Its health matters to residents, visitors, municipalities, businesses, community organizations, and everyone who cares about the future of Alberta’s lakes and watersheds.

As the first Executive Director of the WWMC, I am honoured to support the Council’s work to protect and sustain Wabamun Lake and its watershed. As someone who calls this watershed home, I have not only a professional commitment but also a personal connection to ensuring its long-term health, beauty, and resilience.

The WWMC brings a practical, collaborative, and science-informed approach to watershed stewardship. Our work is guided by the Wabamun Lake Watershed Management Plan and its four key goals:

1. Protecting water quality,

2. Supporting healthy aquatic ecosystems and biodiversity,

3. Promoting wise land use, and

4. Encouraging engaged stewardship.

These goals guide everything we do, helping connect big-picture watershed planning to practical action — restoring shorelines, sharing science, supporting informed decisions, building partnerships, and helping residents and lake users understand how they can make a difference.

Healthy watersheds do not happen by chance. A lake’s condition is shaped by what happens across the shorelines, wetlands, streams, lands, and communities that make up its watershed. The WWMC helps connect science, community experience, and decision-making so the health of Wabamun Lake and its watershed remains part of the conversations, choices, and actions that shape its future.

I invite you to explore our work, attend an event, participate in stewardship opportunities, and stay connected. Together, we can protect what makes Wabamun Lake so special and help ensure it remains healthy, vibrant, and resilient for generations to come.

Warmly,

Erica Sivell
